LFCC 2017

This post is very delayed but better late than never.  I attended London Film and Comic Con back at the end of July and added a few graphs to my posters!

Dickey Beer

I’d been queuing for Alan Tudyk but when it became clear that he was going to be late I decided to come back later and opted to go and meet Dickey Beer who was a stuntman in Return of the Jedi and played both Boba Fett and a Biker Scout

Alan Tudyk

Alan played K-2SO in Rogue One so I added him to my quad and my 13×19 Celebration poster, which is now only one graph away (Diego Luna) from completion!

Mads Mikkelsen

Mads played Galen Erso in Rogue One so I met him next.

John Rhys-Davies

John played the dwarf ‘Gimli’ in Lord of the Rings and I have been waiting a long time to add him to my mini poster.  The experience was a little frustrating as he wouldn’t sign where I wanted him to (above Gimli’s head) and instead opted to add a very large autograph with an arrow.  What can you do?

Mark Austin

Mark played Boba Fett in the Special Edition of A New Hope where Boba appears in the Falcon’s hanger in Mos Eisley.

Warwick Diamond

Warwick, the son of Peter and brother of Frazer also played a Jawa in A New Hope.

Colin Hunt

Colin is a new name on the convention circuit, having only recently been “discovered”.  He played a number of roles in Empire and Jedi including a Mon Calamari, Gamorrean Guard and a Snow Trooper so I added him to my Empire and Jedi posters.

Conleth Hill

Conleth plays Varys in Game of Thrones.  I was bizarre to see him with hair!

Anthony Forrest

Anthony played the Storm Trooper who interrogated Luke & Obi Wan in Mos Eisley when Obi Wan uttered the famous phrase “These are not the droids you are looking for”.  He also played a character called Fixer who never made it into the final cut of the film.

Alistair Petrie

Alistair played General Draven in Rogue One so I added him to my quad.

Valene Kane

Valene played Lyra Erso, mother of Jyn and wife of Galen in Rogue One.

Martin Gordon

Martin played Vanee in Rogue One

Pilou Asbaek

Pilou plays Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones

Natalie Dormer

Finally I met Natalie Dormer who played Margery Tyrell in Game of Thrones.  The signing was fast and manic and I missed the chance at a photo.

All in all it was a great weekend and I got to add lots of nice new autographs to my posters.

Star Wars Celebration 2017

It is the Monday after the biggest Star Wars convention of the year, Celebration.  This time around it was held in Orlando and I was unable to attend.  They had a stellar line up of Rogue One guests and thankfully Dave was attending so he picked them up on my Rogue One poster for me.

First up was Forest Whitaker on Friday 14th April.  He played Saw Gerrara in Rogue One.  The convention was being run by Topps and they strictly disallowed any kind of photography at the table, but Dave did manage to get a couple of photos from a distance.

I’m really happy with how it came out and it was a nice bonus to get his character name inscribed too!

Next up Dave met Felicity Jones who played Jyn Erso, on Saturday 15th April.  He managed to take a short video from a distance of Felicity at the beginning of the signing so I’ve included a couple of stills here..

Again I’m really happy with this autograph.  Felicity filled the space nicely and I got a character name inscription too.

I’m very happy with how this piece is coming together particularly as Jiang Wen has been a ghost during the publicity tour for Rogue One.  I’m fairly certain that the only people in the world who have his autograph on a Rogue One piece are the few of us who were in the garage at Celebration last year!  I’ve seen many Rogue One cast pieces and none of them have Jiang Wen so I feel very lucky to have got him.

I’ll be meeting Alan Tudyk at LFCC in the Summer and then it will only be Diego Luna who is missing from the main cast!  I may decide to add Daniel Naprous and/or Spencer Wilding too but there seems to be so much controversy about who played Vader in the film that I may just not bother.

Donnie Yen at XXX: Return of Xander Cage Premiere

I attended the premiere for the new film XXX: Return of Xander Cage at the O2 Arena on 10th January 2017 to attempt to meet Donnie Yen and get his autograph on my poster!

After a whole day spent acquiring a wristband, waiting around and queueing up I’d managed to secure a good position near the front, right behind where all of the celebrities are getting photographed.  You can see me (and in some cases my poster board) in the background of all of these!

Sadly however I cannot seem to find a decent one of Donnie with me in it so i’ll have to settle for these two.. you can see the white tassels of my jacket through the third X in the first photo and my poster board in the second photo.

Thankfully after all the waiting I did manage to add Donnie’s autograph to my poster.  Given how busy it was I think that this turned out well.  It’s the first autograph I’ve added to my Rogue One piece since Celebration and gets me one graph closer to the complete item.  Just Felicity Jones, Forest Whittaker, Alan Tudyk & Diego Luna to go now!

London Film & Comic Con 2016 – Sunday

Today was the final day of what had been a convention filled couple of weeks.  My schedule was fairly light but I was looking forward to meeting the biggest guest of the weekend for me.. The Emperor himself Ian McDiarmid!

I got in the queue for 7 AM and by the time the doors opened I was around 40th in a queue of maybe 2,000.  I headed straight for Ian McDiarmid’s desk and got the second VQ ticket that was handed out.. number 38.  I popped over to Donald Sumpter’s desk to get a VQ ticket but they weren’t handing any out so I decided to just join Ian’s queue.

Ian McDiarmid

Thankfully we weren’t waiting very long as Ian showed up around 9:20.  In complete contrast to a failed attempt that I had to get his autograph at the theatre, Ian was in a great mood today.

I’d ummed and arred about which pieces I should get him to sign but in the end I settled on just Jedi and Trilogy posters.  He did feature in Empire but only in the 1997 Special Edition of the film where he was superimposed over the original Emperor Clive Revill.

The paint pen ended up splodging just a little on the R of ‘Emperor’ on my Jedi poster but it’s ok because the splodge sort of looks like an R anyway.

Donald Sumpter

I headed back to Donald Sumpter’s queue only to find out that shortly after I left earlier they started giving out VQ tickets.  I was number 140.. argh!  It ended up taking around 90 minutes before I could meet him for a signature on my Game of Thrones poster.  He played Grand Maester Lewin.

After signing ‘Donald’ he decided to change pen which is why the second half is a little bolder but I think it looks ok!

Fraser Diamond

My final meeting of the day was with Fraser Diamond who played a Jawa in a New Hope.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out.  The placement of his autograph seems to add a bit of balance to the piece that was missing before.

So that was it for the weekend and here is how all of my projects are looking now…

London Film & Comic Con 2016 – Friday

London Film & Comic Con 2016 came around very quickly, just a short two weeks after Celebration.  In the preceding months most of my thoughts and energy had gone into Celebration so it came as a bit of a shock to get to the wednesday before LFCC having not really thought that much about it.  Either way the line up was great for Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings so there was no way that I was missing it.

I got to the venue around 8 AM and was pleasantly surprised at the short queue which awaited me.  Friday at LFCC is always a lot quieter and with a lack of Friday-only guests attendance was fairly modest.. whatever the reason I was happy for the lack of people.

Mads Mikkelsen

First on the agenda was Mads Mikkelsen.  I’d sadly missed him at Celebration but thankfully LFCC gave me another opportunity to add him to my Rogue One teaser.  Mads was a lovely guy who had a lot of time for every person who approached his desk, in spite of the long queue.  He was very intrigued by my poster and it was the first he’d signed with so many other members of the cast already present.  He added an inscription of his character name Galen.

Dave Prowse

Next up I met Dave Prowse for what seemed like the hundredth time.  Every time I start up a new project he just has to be on it of course!  I was very happy to add him to my K9 Empire poster, particularly in light of his recent announcement that he will be limiting his convention appearances starting from next year.  He picked a nice spot to place his usual ‘Dave Prowse is Darth Vader’.

Ellie Kendrick

Last up for today was Ellie Kendrick who played Meera Reed in Game of Thrones.  Our encounter was brief but she seemed happy to be there and I’m glad to add her to my poster.

That was it for Day 1!  Everyone I needed in under an hour.  I helped out Dave with a few signed for his Star Wars poster then took to the floor for a leisurely browse of the stalls.

Star Wars Celebration – Friday (Part 2)

I’d managed to get all of my autographs with plenty of time to spare for the Rogue One panel so I took my posters back to the car and grabbed something to eat.  Rumours were rife that the cast would be making an appearance so I sat down to take it all in, relaxed that I’d got all of the autographs that I wanted and excited to see what was coming!

The panel did not disappoint.  We got the entire main cast of the film along with director Gareth Edwards, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Story Writer John Knoll and a few other Lucasfilm people.

Better still, half way through the panel they revealed a new poster for Rogue One and told the audience that EVERYONE in attendance would receive one on the way out.  I was absolutely thrilled by this and no sooner had I heard the announcement than I was planning how to get some autographs on that beautiful poster.

We got to see a few clips from the film, Jiang Wen dropped a clanger of a spoiler then the panel ended with the trailer.  As soon as the credits rolled I was up and out of my chair like a shot, running for the poster and the opportunity to get some autographs.

I darted out of the theatre and headed for the only direction that could be “backstage”, a glass door near the toilet block next to the Celebration stage.  There I met Ollie, someone who I had been chatting to in the queue earlier who was similarly excited at the prospect of getting his poster signed.  Frustratingly neither of us had a pen… a glance around the corner and GARETH EDWARDS was walking towards us.

In the chaos I’m not sure quite how it happened but a blue sharpie was produced and Gareth proceeded to write “This is the first time I’ve signed this poster” on Ollie’s poster!  Once he’d completed that I shook his hand and expressed how excited I was for Rogue One, he said “Thanks”, signed my poster and added ‘2ND!’.

2016-07-15 17.10.12

We thanked him and turned around to find the one and only John Knoll walking towards us.  He also graciously signed our posters and posed for a photo!

Aside from Ollie and I, I only saw two other people getting their posters signed by Gareth and I don’t believe anyone else got John so we were feeling very lucky.

We hung around for an hour or so waiting for anyone else to appear from backstage but it seemed like we’d missed them.  Surely enough an executive from Lucasfilm came out and told us that they were “in a press conference” and that we should “all leave this area”.. sadly for her, the confirmation that the cast were still in the building reinvigorated our desire to stick around.

We investigated a few other parts of the Excel around the area that we believe that the cast were in, by this point there were 7 of us who were determined to stick it out and get whatever we could.

Surely enough, after a further 2 hours of waiting around the cast started to emerge from the room that we’d identified as “the press conference room”.  First to come out was Jiang Wen.. he was more than happy to sign for us and put a lovely bold autograph on the left hand side of my poster.

Next Felicity Jones and Forest Whitaker emerged but in both cases we were pushed away by Disney/Lucasfilm people and they didn’t sign for us.

Riz Ahmed was next to appear and he was great.  He couldn’t have been happier to sign for us and it was almost like we were honouring him by even asking.  I’m not sure how long that will last for!  Either way I got a nice handshake out of him and complimented him on Four Lions, a favourite of mine.

After what seemed like a long wait Kathy Kennedy appeared.  She seemed happy enough to see us waiting and put a lovely signature on each of our posters.

Sadly we didn’t get any photos of those signings as there just wasn’t enough time but next to come out of the door was Ben Mendelsohn the new bid bag guy, Director Krennic.  He seemed like he’d had a good evening and mentioned that this was the first time he’d signed Rogue One stuff… pretty cool!  Neil got this nice photo of him signing my poster.

13697051_10153578263480974_4734879719027848336_n

At this point things turned south.  I’m not sure what happened exactly but Lucasfilm decided to send in the heavies to clear us all out.  We were still hoping for Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Diego Luna but this new batch of security was not to be messed with.  I’d later heard that someone else in another group had been taking the piss by trying to get selfies with everyone and generally being a bit aggressive.  There’s always one who has to spoil it.

Anyway it was a great experience and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to have these six names on my poster within 5 hours of owning it!

2016-07-18 11.41.35

Mads Mikkelsen will be appearing at LFCC in a couple of weeks, and i’ll try for the rest at the premiere.  This a great start and I couldn’t be happier with it!

After it was clear that there were no more autographs to be had I retired to the pub and joined Ben, Dave, Neil, Stu and Graham for a well earned pint!

We finished off the evening by checking out the room sale which was a rather cramped “Bring and Buy” sale in the lobby of a local hotel.  It was slightly surreal but a fitting way to end such a brilliant day.
